The Risk People Insure Least and Face Most

A working career is far more likely to be interrupted by disability than ended by early death.

Most households insure the car, the house, and their life. The thing that actually produces everything else, the ability to work, is the one most often left uncovered.

Why the gap exists

Disability is harder to picture than death. It is also harder to price emotionally, because it does not end the household's expenses. It reduces income while leaving costs in place, and frequently adds new ones.

What usually exists already

  • Employer short term disability, which typically covers a limited number of weeks.
  • Employer long term disability, which often replaces a percentage of base salary rather than total compensation, and may not cover bonuses or commissions.
  • Social Security disability, which has a strict definition of disability and an application process that frequently takes time.

Each of these has a waiting period before benefits begin and a benefit period after which they end. Those two terms matter as much as the monthly amount.

The arithmetic worth running

Take your monthly expenses. Subtract whatever income would continue if you could not work. The difference is the monthly shortfall. Then ask how many months your savings would cover it.

Our disability savings calculator does exactly this. For most households the answer lands somewhere between a few months and about a year, which is short relative to how long a serious disability often lasts.

Questions to ask about coverage you have

  1. How long is the waiting period before benefits begin?
  2. How long do benefits last?
  3. What percentage of income is replaced, and is it based on base salary only?
  4. How does the policy define disability? Own occupation and any occupation are meaningfully different standards.
  5. Are benefits taxable? That depends on who paid the premium and how.

Where this fits

Disability coverage is not something we place. What we can do is help you see the size of the gap clearly, and point you toward the right professional if closing it makes sense for your situation.
